"I've always done things the hard way. I was born like a piece of tangled yarn. The job is trying to untangle it, and I'll probably go on doing it for the rest of my life."

Flowers and Hexagons

So, what have I been working on?  Two main projects, one for my daughter Aeryn and one for my niece Ali.  The first is a wall hanging for Aeryn's room.

It is a block of crocheted flowers which I have added beading on some of the petals.  I'm still working on this and will post some pictures when I am done and have it on the wall. The second one is just the hexagons right now, but I found this very pretty pattern for hexagons that have a flower motif in them.

Going to make an afghan with these.  I love the bright colors.  Here is the link for the flower motifs...http://rosehip.typepad.com/rose_hip_blog/2008/11/index.html and the one for the one with the hexagon flowers can be found here...http://heidibearscreative.blogspot.com/2010/05/african-flower-hexagon-crochet-tutorial.html.

Next Friday night I have been invited to a fellowship with other ladies who like to crochet and knit from the church I attend.  Looking forward to "hooking it" with my church ladies.  Pictures to come of course!!!

Just Finished This For MOM

For my mother, her head is a little bigger than mine so this is kind of too big for my head, but you get the idea.

Hat

Ok, I have the basic hat going on here...it has a bit of a brim in the front and I plan on adding something like buttons and a crocheted strip connecting the buttons across the area just above the brim.  Guess I will have to check out my stash of crafts/sewing stuff to see what I can come up with.  Stay tuned for the finished project.  So far I like it...even without anything added it is cute.  But leaving it plain would just be wrong and so not me.

The yarn is some I got last year on sale at Hobby Lobby.  I believe it is Vanna White's brand but I have no idea what the name of the color is since I used it originally for some other project  but decided it would probably make a good hat instead.  Does anyone else do that?  Start or make a project only to change your mind about it later?  I have a lot of yarn from unfinished projects.

I should make a category for things made from yarn that's been rescued from my other unfinished or ungifted projects.  Any ideas about what to call that category?  I have a whole box full of this kind of yarn.

Addicted to Yarn

Welcome to my new blog which is dedicated to the celebration of all things that are yarn worthy.  My name is Pam and I love to purchase yarn for knitting and crocheting (much to my husband's dismay).  Unfortunately, since I am not that organized, it looks like I am just hoarding yarn instead of actually creating anything.  Thus the name for this new blog.

Actually I do create lots of stuff...hats, sweaters, shrugs, scarves and blankets mostly.  Right now I am working on a kids hat, and there are pictures to come of course.  This blog is in creation mode right now so please be patient as I need to let  the whole thing begin - you could say I am in the casting on stage...

In the meantime I can share a little bit about my experience with yarn.

When I was a Sophomore in High School my neighbor taught me how to knit.  I wanted to knit a sweater...and I spent  hours sitting in my room, knitting and listening to The Beatles.  That was the ugliest sweater, it was big enough that three people could have put in around their necks.  But I had a great time making it and so my love for yarn was born.

After that first discouraging experience, I put away my knitting needles for years.  However, in my late 20s and early 30s I decided to give it another chance and I started knitting again.  This time scarves...which are way easier and since they can be made in a short amount of time - I thought, this is the perfect hobby for me.  That was the fall/winter that "fun fur" had become popular and I really took a lot of time picking out yarn and experimenting with different textures.

Several years later, when I was pregnant with my third child and stuck in the hospital for two months I decided to teach myself to crochet. I thought it would be hard but with the help of the internet, you can now learn to do just about anything and there is no shortage of free patterns online.  I made several baby blankets and sweaters for my daughter Aeryn.  Funny note to add, evidently I had either given those sweaters away or sold them at a yard sale after Aeryn had grown out of them.  That's not really funny because I probably should have put them in a keepsake box (you know hoard them), the part that is interesting was seeing them again at someone else's yard sale.  Because I am occasionally resisting the urge to hoard I didn't buy them back.

Anyway, since learning to crochet I have done quite a few hats, scarves, and lots of things in between.  I love to crochet those little dishcloths.  They work so well - and make great gifts during the holidays.  Usually I also make my own soaps and around Christmas I like to give soaps and dishcloths as presents to teachers and my husband's co-workers.

That about sums up my "experience" in crocheting and knitting.  I wish I had kept that first horrid sweater to show in comparison to my level of expertise now.  Not that I consider myself an expert in crochet or knitting. I do know that I LOVE yarn...and one of these days my success in these fiber arts might equal the joy I get from holding a fresh ball of yarn.  Who knows.
